Enter the beast! The serpent of old whose mission was to take away (subtract) from the word of God by bringing in doubt and deception to Eve who was enticed by the fruit that was good for food, pleasant to the eyes, and able to make one wise. Yet Adam having eaten of the fruit, sinned against God. The wages of sin is a spiritual death, a separation from God. A great debt that could only be paid through a sacrificial offering of a perfect lamb. For us, Jesus is that perfect lamb who died for our sins.
In chapters 3&4 we notice that in each event, from the serpent’s deception of Eve, to Adam eating of the fruit, to Cain’s anger, to the murder of Abel, to Lamech killing a man, what was missing in avoiding sin, was a reaching out to God for help. It’s not until we get to Seth’s son Enosh that “men began to call on the name of the Lord.” He is our very present help in trouble. It is the calling on the name of the Lord that brings salvation and cancels the debt. Calling on the name of the Lord also brings wisdom, strength, resolve, peace and helps us avoid sin. A word for you today: in the face of temptations and trouble, call on the name of the Lord!
Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (Phil 2:9-11)
