Where do we begin? So far we’ve seen God “adding” by creating the heavens, earth and everything in it. He “divided” light from darkness, land from water, male from female, animals from birds of the air and sea creatures. These two chapters did not just end with addition and division, God told creation to be fruitful and “multiply.” Why? With the critical eye of a master artist, who spoke the world into existence and breathed life into the nostrils of man, God looked at creation and saw that it was good.
Note that God’s equation was never meant to include “subtraction.” His desire was for man to be fruitful and multiply. His desire was for man to walk with Him forever. Yet in the next chapters we will see how one act will result in subtraction through sin and take away from that relationship between God and man throughout future generations.
We will also see that God’s plan was not thwarted nor was He defeated. He devised another equation that would restore this relationship. His Son, Jesus would come down and reconcile the world to himself and make right what had been wronged.
